About the Book:
The morning after Halloween Nan wakes up on a subway train. She doesn’t know how she got the costume she’s wearing. Or the makeup. Or the bruises. She's not supposed to wake up in places like this anymore, with a black hole where her memory should be. As she pieces together the last twenty-four hours, she flashes back to memories of the "bad girl" she used to be. The deeper Nan digs into what happened Halloween night the more she realizes some memories should not be forgotten.Check out our Exclusive Interview with the Author here:
1) How did you get the idea for the novel?
I do so much of my pre-writing on the subway, which basically means I stare blankly out the subway window and imagine stuff. It’s a VERY complicated process, aided greatly by snacks. Nan, the main character in Burmout, just sort of belly-flopped out of my imagination and landed on the L train with no memory of the past 24 hours. Then she looked up at me and whispered, What happened to me? And I knew the answer was my story.
2) Considering a book from the first word you write to the moment you see it on a bookstore shelf, what’s your favorite part of the process? What’s your least favorite?
I love, love, love reading through a complete first draft. I print the whole thing out, go to my favorite coffee shop, and read it from start to finish. My least favorite part is getting started. I will rewrite the beginning of a book a dozen times before I let myself move on.
3) If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would it be?
Donnie, from my first book Skin, will always have a special place in my heart. I would want to buy him dinner and fuss over him and make sure he’s okay. But I’d also invite Gigi from The Exile of Gigi Lane, because the girl is bananas and I love her.
4) Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
There are the big things, like seeing my book in stores, or going on tour in England. But one little thing that still makes me so happy is seeing my book in libraries, with one of those deliciously crinkly clear book covers. Just the feel of it, and knowing that some kid might come to the library and bring it home, fills me with absolute joy.
5) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?Rice Krispie Treats. They are perfection in a square.
