About the Book:
Grief brought Finley to Ireland. LOVE WILL LEAD HER HOME.Finley Sinclair is not your typical eighteen-year-old. She’s witty, tough, and driven. With an upcoming interview at the Manhattan music conservatory, Finley needs to compose her audition piece. But her creativity disappeared with the death of her older brother, Will.
She decides to study abroad in Ireland so she can follow Will’s travel journal. It’s the place he felt closest to God, and she’s hopeful being there will help her make peace over losing him. So she agrees to an exchange program and boards the plane.
Beckett Rush, teen heartthrob and Hollywood bad boy, is flying to Ireland to finish filming his latest vampire movie. On the flight, he meets Finley. She’s the one girl who seems immune to his charm. Undeterred, Beckett convinces her to be his assistant in exchange for his help as a tour guide.
Once in Ireland, Finley starts to break down. The loss of her brother and the pressure of school, her audition, and whatever it is that is happening between her and Beckett, leads her to a new and dangerous vice. When is God going to show up for her in this emerald paradise?
Then she experiences something that radically changes her perspective on life. Could it be God convincing her that everything she’s been looking for has been with her all along?
1) After this many books, how do you keep the content and story fresh?
Scratch and sniff pages. There You'll Find Me smells like lilacs, the green grass of Ireland, and some really questionable sausage.
2) Which authors/books are you most influenced by?
I love stories that are character driven. I love a book that has humor, sass, some romance. I like it when each page sparks and comes to life through sharp dialogue and characters that are so clever and well-rounded, I know them. Those are the qualities I try to create in my own books.
3) If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about your book, what would the theme of the show be?
The theme would be "Return of Oprah's Favorite Things." Shoot, we would not be talking about my book. We would be rolling out the VW bugs and the Mini Coopers and the Tiffany earrings.
But now for my return trip to the show, we could talk There You'll Find Me. O and I would discuss heartache. The kind that Finley from TYFM has endured since the death of her brother. She has been paralyzed by pain. It's turned her life around and changed who she is, and she can't get a hold on her new normal. She's determined to take the reigns back on her life and get things under control. Unfortunately, the very opposite happens.
Oprah and I would also talk about my heartache. Because 25 years of her show is not enough, and I ain't watch OWN! I don't even know how to live my life without her daily advice now. I've been jaywalking, dating badly, doing non-good deeds, and reading happy books. Come back, Oprah! Come back!
4) This would make a great film. Any talks of turning your book into a movie?
No, I could never release control of my art that way. (Drew Barrymore, why won't you return my calls?) I know they would dilute the story. (I have the cast all picked out, so no need for a casting director!) They would change lines, take out the story's heart. (I'd just one tiny role. You wouldn't even have to give me lines.) It's a very risky thing to hand over movie rights, and I owe it to my book to maintain it's artistic integrity. (Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Ron Howard, Ephron--guys, we can't talk about the movie if you don't drop your restraining orders on me...)
5) What kind of research did you have to do to bring this story to life on the page?
I had the burden of traveling to Ireland and visiting for about a week. It was grueling. Hanging out with incredibly kind people, staying in B&Bs, eating wonderful food, going to all the beautiful, enchanting places mentioned in the book, driving through the rolling countryside. Hearing those lilting accents along with authentic, toe-tapping traditional music. Tough stuff. Totally a labor of love for my readers. Only for them would I sacrifice in such a way.
6) Desert Island time. You can bring one person and one thing. What would
you bring?
Strawberry shortcake.
Oh, wait. You didn't say dessert island.
Never mind. I no longer want to go to this island.
