1) Which authors/books are you most influenced by?

The Hunger Games because it’s the most primal book I’ve read in ages. The Great Gatsby because it’s beautiful and heartbreaking. The Golden Compass because we should all aspire to be a little more like Lyra. White Noise because it’s brilliant and funny and the book that made me want to be a writer. And Lolita because it’s naughty.

2) This would make a great film. Any talks of turning your book into a movie?

The rights have been optioned by Disney, and they’re working with an edgy production company called Mayhem. The script is being finalized right now and we’re hoping for a 2013 release date.

3) Thinking back to the way beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

Finish your first book, just that you know you can do it. It’s very easy to get inspired. It’s much harder to push through the writer’s block and see a story to completion. You can always go back and make it better. In every first draft, I reach a point in where I want to give up—but because I finished that first book (and now a second, third, and fourth), by now, I know that I can do it.

4) Which fictional character do you have a secret crush on?

Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind. I love how contentious his relationship with Scarlett is, and it’s only that way because Rhett knows her better than anyone else in the world—including Scarlett, herself.

5) If you could have one super power what would it be?

I’d like to be able to fly.
