About BURNED:

When friends stop trusting each other, Darkness is there to fan the flames…

Things have turned black at the House of Night. Zoey Redbird’s soul has shattered. With everything she’s ever stood for falling apart, and a broken heart making her want to stay in the Otherworld forever, Zoey’s fading fast. It’s seeming more and more doubtful that she will be able pull herself back together in time to rejoin her friends and set the world to rights. As the only living person who can reach her, Stark must find a way to get to her. But how? He will have to die to do so, the Vampyre High Council stipulates. And then Zoey will give up for sure. There are only 7 days left…

Enter BFF Stevie Rae. She wants to help Z but she has massive problems of her own. The rogue Red Fledglings are acting up, and this time not even Stevie Rae can protect them from the consequences. Her kinda boyfriend, Dallas, is sweet but too nosy for his own good. The truth is, Stevie Rae’s hiding a secret that might be the key to getting Zoey home but also threatens to explode her whole world.

In the middle of the whole mess is Aphrodite: ex-Fledgling, trust-fund baby, total hag from Hell (and proud of it). She’s always been blessed (if you could call it that) with visions that can reveal the future, but now it seems Nyx has decided to speak through her with the goddess’s own voice, whether she wants it or not. Aphrodite’s loyalty can swing a lot of different ways, but right now Zoey’s fate hangs in the balance.

Three girls… playing with fire… if they don’t watch out, everyone will get Burned.

Read our Exclusive Interview with P.C. Cast!

1) What genre have you not yet written but really want to try?

I’d love to try my hand at the horror genre. I like to scare myself!

2) Thinking back to the way beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

Not to romanticize the job of being an author. Successful authors are professionals. They treat their careers like JOBS. A successful author educates herself about the business of publishing while she’s honing her writing skills. She is also a savvy businesswoman. Sadly, there is no lounging about eating bonbons and sipping champagne while you wait for the Muse to whisper a bestseller in your ear.

3) What kind of research did you have to do to bring this story to life on the page?

I did loads of interesting research for BURNED. One of the coolest things I did was to spend quite a bit of time tromping around the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. I also was introduced to some wonderful Clan men and women who were generous and kind enough to share their rich history with me.

4) When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer? Have you had other jobs along the way?

I can’t ever remember not wanting to be an author. I wrote my first book in first grade (Blubby the Blue Whale – it hasn’t been published. Yet.). I have had many jobs along the way: I served active duty in the USAF, put myself through college being executive assistant to the director of nursing services for a large hospital, and taught high school for fifteen years.

5) Which fictional character do you have a secret crush on?

Of my own making: ClanFintan from my Partholon novels. Although as the heroine in those novels is embarrassingly like me, the crush probably isn’t very “secret.”

Someone else’s: Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER books.

3 Autographed Copies will be given away on Friday, April 16, 2010!

About The Book:

Only two weeks ago, life was all too predictable. But that was before I saw my first ghost. Now along with my supernatural friends Tori, Derek, and Simon, I'm on the run from the Edison Group, which genetically altered us as part of their sinister experiment. We're hiding in a safe house that might not be as safe as it seems. We'll be gone soon anyway, back to rescue those we'd left behind and take out the Edison Group . . . or so we hope.

Read our Exclusive Interview with the Author!

1) This would make a great film. Any talks of turning your book into a movie?

Not right now. With films, it's a matter of Hollywood coming to the author, and I’m still waiting for that to happen!

2) When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer? Have you had other jobs along the way?

Growing up, I never thought 'writer' was a valid career choice, probably because my parents didn't. They fully supported it as a hobby, but didn't think it was something you should plan to make a living at. So I went to university for psychology. As I was preparing for graduate school, though, I realized I was heading into a career that would leave me no time to pursue a dream of publication. So I switched gears and went into computer programming, which gave me a 9-to-5 job that paid the bills while I took writing courses, joined writing groups and worked at improving my craft. I sold my first novel in 1999 (it came out in 2001) and started writing full-time in 2002.

3) Considering a book from the first word you write to the moment you see it on a bookstore shelf, what’s your favorite part of the process? What’s your least favorite?

There isn’t any part that I dislike, but if I had to pick my favourite, it would be writing the first draft. It’s the creative process of seeing an idea unfold into a story that I like best. Next would be editing—the chance to polish the story. Least favourite would be proofreading, because by that time, I’ve read it so often I know what every line should say and I don’t catch the errors.

4) When you start a new book, do you like to outline the entire story or fly by the seat of your pants? What about your characters? Do you figure them out entirely before you start writing or do they reveal themselves to you along the way?

My process is constantly evolving. Being published means having a schedule, so it's become very important to learn what methods work best for me. I've discovered I work best from an outline. My finished novel never completely follows the outline though. Better ideas arise during the first draft and I follow them wherever they lead. The first draft is a very intense process for me, and during that time, I'm rarely without my notebook. When the first draft is done, I ease back into a more relaxed editing mode.

It’s a similar process with new characters. I start knowing them quite well, but they continue to evolve as they come to life on the page.

5) If you could have one super power what would it be?

I would love to be a werewolf because I think it would be amazing to experience life—temporarily!--in a different form. The secondary characteristics would be cool, too, but those "extras" also make it hard for werewolves to blend, so being practical, I'd go with spell-casters. Their powers take work to learn, but overall they have fewer drawbacks.
6) What's up next for you?

2011 will see the release of the first novel in my new YA trilogy. The trilogy will be called Darkness Rising and the first book is The Gathering. You’ll notice a similarity to the first one: Darkest Powers and The Summoning. That’s because they’re set in the same universe. The Gathering will introduce subjects in another Edison Group experiment, and the characters from the two trilogies will eventually meet up.

About the Author:

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series, "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, and Nadia Stafford crime series. She lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets. Visit her website at: www.KelleyArmstrong.com.

The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott

THE UNWRITTEN RULE

by Elizabeth Scott

Commercial YA
Simon Pulse
www.ElizabethWrites.com

5 Signed Copies will be given away on Friday, April 9, 2010!

About the Book:

Everyone knows the unwritten rule: You don't like your best friend's boyfriend.

Sarah has had a crush on Ryan for years. He's easy to talk to, supersmart, and totally gets her. Lately it even seems like he's paying extra attention to her. Everything would be perfect except for two things: Ryan is Brianna's boyfriend, and Brianna is Sarah's best friend.

Sarah forces herself to avoid Ryan and tries to convince herself not to like him. She feels so guilty for wanting him, and the last thing she wants is to hurt her best friend. But when she's thrown together with Ryan one night, something happens. It's wonderful...and awful.

Sarah is torn apart by guilt, but what she feels is nothing short of addiction, and she can't stop herself from wanting more...

Read our Exclusive Interview with the Author!

1) How did you get the idea for the novel?

The Unwritten Rule actually came about because my editor at Simon Pulse, Jennifer Klonsky, and I were talking about friendships and high school and the things you just instinctively knew you could never ever do then, like be interested in a friend's boyfriend and I said, "Yeah, it's like the unwritten rule," and bam! There was the story. It just popped into my head--all the characters, everything that was going to happen--and I love my editor for letting me take the idea and run with it!

2) What genre have you not yet written but really want to try?

I wouldn't mind writing a YA paranormal--my short stories actually had a lot of paranormal in them, and it was fun writing!

3) What scene or bit of dialogue in the book are you most proud of and why?

I'm pretty fond of this moment because I feel like it's very true:

"There are a million rules for being a girl. There are a million things you have to do to get through each day. High school has things that can trip you up, ruin you, people smile and say one thing and mean another, and you have to know all the rules, you have to know what you can and can't do."

4) What’s the first thing you do when starting a new book? What’s the first thing you do when finishing a new book?

Start writing. (I know! But that really is what I do--when my idea is ready to go I just dive in)

Say, "Yay, I'm done! For now." (And I might do a little victory/please-let-the rewriting-go-well dance too)

5) What's up next for you?

In September, Dutton will be releasing Grace, which is about a female suicide bomber--and what happens to her when she decides she doesn't want to die.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Scott grew up in a town so small it didn't even have a post office, though it did boast an impressive cattle population. She's sold hardware and panty hose and had a memorable three-day stint in the dot-com industry, where she learned that she really didn't want a career burning CDs. She lives just outside Washington, DC, with her husband; firmly believes you can never own too many books; and would love it if you visited her website at: www.ElizabethWrites.com
