5 Signed Copies will be given away on Friday, April 2, 2010!

About the Book:

Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard--falling from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around. Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge. If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don't break them both first.

Tensions grow and the abuse worsens as the final days of senior year march toward an explosive conclusion in this dark new tale from the author of Cracked Up To Be.

Read our Exclusive Interview with the Author!

1) How did you get the idea for the novel?

I've always been fascinated by girl-bullying/mean girls. I've had my share of mean girl experiences and they left a huge impact on me. Also, I think it's hard to meet any woman that doesn't have a mean girl story which is really sad--but also very interesting. I had a lot of questions about my experiences and those questions eventually turned into Some Girls Are.

2) Considering a book from the first word you write to the moment you see it on a bookstore shelf, what’s your favorite part of the process? What’s your least favorite?

I love the editing process! I have a great editor who challenges me and has really helped me grow as a writer. I LOVE getting the cover! That's the part I anticipate and look forward to most, to be honest. It's fun trying to guess how St. Martin's sees the face of my books. I don't have a least favorite part of the process, but I will say copy-editing makes me extremely nervous. Copy-editors are brilliant, but I'm always TERRIFIED of messing something up when I start marking the changes on a copy-edited manuscript.

3) Who’s your favorite character in the book and why? Who was the most fun to write?

I think Regina has to be my favorite character because the book is told from her perspective, and if she wasn't my favorite character, I wouldn't be able to tell her story. But sometimes writing her was really hard because she's going through such a miserable time. Kara was a lot of fun to write in a weird way. She's so extremely evil and unreasonable and awful that meant she got to cross a lot of lines and really push it--which is always exciting.

4) How do you come up with your character names?

I generally go to baby name websites and browse through them until I feel a "click" if that makes any kind of sense. It's like a gut-feeling. As soon as I feel that, the character HAS to have that name.

5) What's up next for you?

I've got two books to write for St. Martin's Press! The next one, my third book, is about a girl struggling to make sense of her father's untimely death, and that's all can say about that for now. :)

4 Signed Copies will be given away on Friday, March 26, 2010!

About the Book:

As if being a purrfect cheerleader isn’t enough responsibility! Tessa Crimson’s the sweet and spunky leader of the SOS (Society of Smitten Kittens), a cheer squad–turned–spy society dedicated to bringing dastardly boyfriends to justice, one cheater at a time. Boyfriend-busting wouldn’t be so bad . . . except that so far, every suspect on the Naughty List has been proven 100% guilty!

When Tessa’s own boyfriend shows up on the List, she turns her sleuthing skills on him. Is Aiden just as naughty as all the rest, or will Tessa’s sneaky ways end in catastrophe?

The Naughty List. Is your boyfriend on it?

Read our Exclusive Interview with the Author!

1) The Aiden character in your book is very dreamy. I fell just a little bit in love when I read it. Is he inspired by anyone you know?

I wish. Unfortunately I didn’t have any tall, blond basketball players in my life. Although there was once a guy in college that I secretly stalked. He may have played basketball. And been blond. And maybe named Aiden. Kidding. His name was Aaron.

2) As writers, we all love to procrastinate. What’s your favorite procrastination activity?

TWITTER! Or TMZ. Please don’t judge me.

3) When you set out to write a new book, are you usually sparked by a story idea or a character?

It used to be only a character that would spark my ideas. But now I come up with a concept and start writing. I can get through the first chapter of just about anything. But whether or not I finish depends on how I feel about the MC. I have to really love them to write their story.

4) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?

Tough. It would be a tie between Reese’s Pieces and chicken wings.

5) What are you working on next?

I’m just finishing book three in the series: A Good Boy is Hard to Find. Besides that I have a new paranormal YA, A NEED SO BEAUTIFUL, that’ll be out next summer from Balzer and Bray.

PRINCESS FOR HIRE

by Lindsey Leavitt

Commercial Young Adult
Disney/Hyperion

5 autographed copies will be given away on Friday, March 19, 2010!

Lindsey tells about how she created the "anti-princess" book and what's in store for this exciting new series! Listen to our exclusive interview with Lindsey here!

About the Book:

When an immaculately dressed woman steps out of an iridescent bubble and asks you if you'd like to become a substitute princess, do you

a) run
b) faint
c) say Yes!

For Desi Bascomb, who's been longing for a bit of glamour in her Idaho life, the choice is a definite C--that is, once she can stop pinching herself. As her new agent Meredith explains, Desi has a rare magical ability: when she applies the ancient Egyptian formula "Royal Rouge," she can transform temporarily into the exact lookalike of any princess who needs her subbing services. Dream come true, right?

Well, Desi soon discovers that subbing involves a lot more than wearing a tiara and waving at cameras. Like, what do you do when a bullying older sister puts you on a heinous crash diet? Or when the tribal villagers gather to watch you perform a ceremonial dance you don't know? Or when a princess's conflicted sweetheart shows up to break things off--and you know she would want you to change his mind?

In this hilarious, winning debut, one girl's dream of glamour transforms into something bigger: the desire to make a positive impact. And an impact Desi makes, one royal fiasco at a time.

About the Author:

Lindsey Leavitt grew up in Las Vegas and now lives in Alabama with her husband and two small daughters. Although she has been a substitute teacher and a homecoming princess, she has never been a substitute princess. Yet. She's still scanning the job pages. Until then, Lindsey is hard at work on the next book in the Princess for Hire series. Visit the author online at: www.LindseyLeavitt.com.

The Karma Club (ARC) by Jessica Brody

THE KARMA CLUB
(Advanced Reader's Copy)

by FBF Founder, Jessica Brody

Commercial Young Adult
Farrar, Straus, Giroux
www.JessicaBrody.com

2 Signed ARCs and 5 autographed posters (signed by Jessica and the cast of the book trailer!) will be given away on Friday, March 12th, 2010!

About the Book:

Madison Kasparkova always thought she understood how Karma works. It’s that mysterious, powerful force that brings harmony to the universe. You know—do good things and you will be rewarded, do something bad and Karma will make sure you get what’s coming to you. A sort of cosmic balancing act.

But when Mason Brooks, Maddy’s boyfriend of two years, gets caught tongue-wrestling with Miss Perfect Body Heather Campbell, and absolutely nothing happens to either of them—except that they wind up the hot new couple of Colonial High School, it seems like Karma has officially left Maddy in the lurch. That’s why Maddy and her best friends, Angie and Jade, decide to start the Karma Club—a secret, members-only organization whose sole purpose is to clean up the messes that the universe has been leaving behind. Whether they’re modifying Heather Campbell’s acne cream as part of “Operation Butterface,” or righting a few wrongs when it comes to Angie and Jade’s own slimy exes, they know they’re just doing what Karma should have done in the first place. They’re taking care of one another.

Sometimes, though, it isn’t wise to meddle with the universe. Because it turns out, when you mess with Karma, Karma messes back. Now Maddy must find a way to balance her life for good, even as everything around her seems to be toppling to the ground.

This book releases April 27, 2010

The Book Trailer:

Featuring a special cameo appearance by Deepak Chopra!

FBF Founder, Jessica Brody answers the most frequently asked questions about the book trailer:

1) This book trailer is unlike any I've seen before. How did you produce it?

Well, it was a long process--about three months in total. I'm actually working on a "Making of" video feature that will go in much more depth, but here's the gist of it: First I wrote a script, featuring some of the key scenes from the book. Then we held auditions for the actors. We probably received over 300 submissions for the lead role of Maddy, auditioned about 50 girls until we finally found Madisen Hill who ended up playing the lead. (It was just a coincidence that she happened to have the same name as the main character!) Then we had 2.5 days of shooting in Los Angeles in early December, then about two months of editing, song placement, audio mixing and color correcting until FINALLY we arrived at the final result you see here!

You can click here to read more about the trailer, including information about all the cast and crew!

Click here to view photos from the Karma Club trailer production!

2) This trailer looks like a movie trailer! Why did you choose to do it that way?

For starters, I used to work in the movie industry. I was a studio executive for MGM Studios (before I became a writer) so I have a lot of good friends and contacts in the business that are able to help me produce these "movie-style" book trailers. Also, I think that readers have a fascination with seeing books come to life on screen (I know I do!). So I thought, how much fun it would be to bring my own books to life through this kind of trailer. And it was! The entire process was SUPER fun. Everyone who worked on this production was amazing and I met some incredible people!

3) How did you get Deepak Chopra to appear in your book trailer?

Okay, that's a really cool story! In The Karma Club book, there's a character that's based on Deepak Chopra, who happens to be a huge inspiration to me. I adore him. I read his books and follow him on Twitter. So one day, I'm sitting on an airplane going from New York to LA and it happens to be a wi-fi enabled flight. So I decide to check Twitter. Deepak's tweet is the most recent tweet on my screen and the guy sitting next to me taps me on the shoulder and says, "I just have to say this: that's my dad." I was flabbergasted! We got to talking, exchanged information and I emailed him a few weeks later, told him about the book and how his father inspired one of the characters and asked if he thought Deepak would be interested in making a cameo appearance in the book trailer. And the next thing I knew, Deepak Chopra was calling me! The entire thing was simply incredible! And Deepak himself, as well as his family and the people who work with him, is SO amazing and generous and kind. I don't believe in accidents. As cliche as it sounds, I do truly believe everything happens for a reason. That the universe aligns perfectly. And this story is proof of that! It's Karma in action!

For more information about Deepak Chopra and his books, please visit: www.DeepakChopra.com

4) How did you get all the music that's in the trailer?

We actually wrote and recorded all of it from scratch! (With the exception of a few songs which were written and performed by close friends of mine.) The very talented Matthew Clark is the mastermind behind the music. He's amazing and he wrote and produced almost ALL the songs you hear in the trailer. Including the song, "Dance Floor High" (playing in the opening scene at the party) which is actually sung by our lead actress, Madisen Hill (who plays Maddy) She's an extremely talented singer/dancer/songwriter/actress. If you haven't heard her stuff or watched any of her music videos, be sure to check her out here: www.myspace.com/madisenhill. I love her to death! And the best part about the music is...we're releasing all the songs (plus a few extra tracks) on a soundtrack next month. So stay tuned for that!

If you want to receive an update when the soundtrack becomes available, click here!

5) How many people did it take to produce the trailer?

Well, I definitely didn't do it alone, that's for sure! In total we had 10 cast, 6 extras, and 13 crew to get the job done. I directed and produced it. Then I had another producer, a cinematographer, an editor, an assistant editor, a make-up artist, a costume designer, grips, production assistants, musicians, a sound mixer, and a colorist. Phew! A lot of people went into this production and I loved working with all of them. And to think, this was only a three and a half minute book trailer. Now you know why movie credits are so long!
