About the Book:
Sometimes you have to go home to find out who you really are
Charlie West went to bed one night an ordinary high school student. He woke up a hunted man. Terrorists are trying to kill him. The police want to arrest him for the stabbing death of his best friend. He doesn't know whose side he's one or who he can trust. With his pursuers closing in on every side, Charlie makes his way back to his hometown to find some answers. There, holed up in an abandoned mansion, he's joined by his friends in a desperate attempt to discover the truth about a murder he can't remember-and the love he can never forget.

Read our Exclusive Interview with Andrew Klavan!

1) How did you get the idea for the novel?

Well, in some sense, the whole Homelanders series is about a guy trying to get home, trying to get back to the life and people he loved. I mean, Charlie is someone who was very secure in what he believed. He had his family, his friends, his faith, his patriotism. Then one day he goes to bed in his own bed and wakes up in the clutches of Islamo-Fascist terrorists. And not only that, the cops are after him for murder! So suddenly, his whole life has been stripped away and he has to try to rebuild it from the ground up, try to reinvent himself before he’s caught or killed. So in The Long Way Home, he actually goes back to his hometown to try to clear his name and, to me, it’s very touching, because there he is, right near all the people he loves, but he can’t approach them or he’ll put them in danger. It’s a story that grew naturally out of the themes of the series.

2) This would make a great film. Any talks of turning your book into a movie?

As a matter of fact, there is talk of turning it into a movie. I’m not allowed to be very specific because the deal’s not official yet, but the people involved are top-notch and seem to have a real understanding of the story. So I’m very excited about it. I’ve had a couple of novels of mine filmed, True Crime and Don’t Say A Word, and both were good experiences. It’d be very cool to see Charlie brought to life on screen.

3) Considering a book from the first word you write to the moment you see it on a bookstore shelf, what’s your favorite part of the process? What’s your least favorite?

I love my job. I really do. I’m happy to go to work every morning. My favorite part is the actual writing, the actual creating. Bringing characters to life, getting their dialogue right, making sentences that have a sort of silent music to them: that is, you don’t notice the sentence but it brings the scene vividly into your mind. It’s very hard, exacting, close work, but I enjoy it like crazy. Worst part? Outlines. I do very careful outlines so I can concentrate on the writing without worrying that some little detail will ruin the whole thing. It’s important to the process, but it’s dull. And I have exactly zero patience with being bored. Less than zero.

4) Desert Island Time. You can bring one person and one thing. What would you bring?

A row boat and a guy with really strong arms. Okay, I’m kidding. Well, the person’s easy: I’d take my wife. Being on a desert island with my wife wouldn’t even be a problem. It’d be a vacation. For me, anyway. I’m not sure how good it would be for her. And a trunkload of books. Gotta have my books.

5) If Charlie West could give one piece of advice to teenage boys, what would it be?

Charlie carries an index card in his pocket that he calls the Churchill card. His karate teacher gave it to him. Written on it are the words of the great British Prime Minister Winston Churchill – advice he gave in a speech to young boys at a school called Harrow: “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” That is great advice, including the exceptions: you should remain open to changing your mind because of honor or good sense, but never because of fear, never because of low motives or intimidation. Charlie tries his best to live out that creed. So do I. And I recommend it.

Here is a heart-stopping, breathtaking tale for fans of action, fantasy, and romance -- of anything with the making of legend.

1) If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would it be?

It would be a toss up between my hero, Chen Yong, or my antihero, Zhong Ye.

2) Which fictional character do you have a secret crush on?

I love both my hero and antihero, mentioned above. I also love Ariel, who is an elemental in Lisa Mantchev's fantastic debut, Eyes Like Stars.

3) Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?

So so many things. As an author, my most exciting moment was receiving my first editorial letter. It made me feel so official and I was very excited to get to work revising to improve my manuscript. Attending the ALA Chicago conference for the first time and being able to toast
Neil Gaiman on his Newbery medal for The Graveyard Book was unforgettable. And the best part of being a published writer is still receiving fan mail from my tween and teen readers. They are always so polite and so enthusiastic and smart. I just love them!

4) Which came first, the title or the novel?

I'm awful with titles. I don't think about them until I'm well done with the novel.

5) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?

Oh this is a really tough one. But I'd have to say fruit tarts, because I love the almondy crust and custard and fresh fruit, especially berries!

3 Signed Copies will be given away on Friday, January 22, 2010!

About the Book:

Popularity is the best revenge.
In the final weeks of eighth grade, Lauren Wood made a choice. She betrayed her best friend, Helen, in a manner so publicly humiliating that Helen had to move to a new town just to save face. Ditching Helen was worth it, though, because Lauren started high school as one of the It Girls--and now, at the start of her senior year, she's the cheerleading captain, the quarterback's girlfriend, and the undisputed queen bee. Lauren has everything she's ever wanted, and she has forgotten all about her ex-best friend.
But Helen could never forget Lauren. After three years of obsessing, she's moving back to her old town. She has a new name and a new look, but she hasn't dropped her old grudges. She has a detailed plan to bring down her former BFF by taking away everything that's ever been important to Lauren—starting with her boyfriend.
Watch out, Lauren Wood. Things are about to get bitchy.

1) What are you working on next?

I’ve started a new YA about a prank that goes very wrong. The main character has to deal with the fall out of the prank and decide who her real friends really are.

2) As writers, we all love to procrastinate. What’s your favorite procrastination activity?

Reading. I love books. I am one of those people who actually gets anxious if I don’t have a book around. When I go into a bookstore I get all excited and have to control myself or I leave with a stack of new books a mile high. I can convince myself that reading is actually research and should sort of count as work which makes it a great procrastination activity.

3) Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel. I am terrible with titles. I’m convinced there is a special skill set that some people have when it comes to titles. I do not have this skill. I called the book Black and White while I was writing it. Then I tried out a bunch of different titles, Getting Revenge, Popularity is the Best Revenge, Look out Lauren before finding the title I have now.

4) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?

COOKIES! I love cookies. I love cookie dough and the finished product. You can imagine how much trouble I get into during Christmas time.

5) If your main character, Helen, could give one piece of advice to teenage girls, what would it be?

It depends when you asked Helen. Early in the book Helen would be full of great advice of all kinds of evil things you could do to people who bother you. You should ignore that advice. By the end of the book I think what she would tell you is that holding onto the past can keep you from embracing what is coming in the future. The only power people have over you is what power you let them have.

6) What’s your favorite part of the writing process? Your least favorite part?

I love writing! I love coming up with the ideas and seeing the characters develop. I even enjoy revisions. The only part I dislike is about ¾ of the way through the book I decide that the book isn’t working. I have no idea how to end the book anymore. I worry that the characters are boring and that no one will ever want to read it. This happens with EVERY book. Now at least I know that these feelings are normal and I press on and keep working.

About the Author:

Eileen Cook spent most of her teen years wishing she were someone else or somewhere else, which is great training for a writer. When she was unable to find any job postings for world famous author, she went to Michigan State University and became a counselor so she could at least afford her book buying habit. But real people have real problems, so she returned to writing because she liked having the ability to control the ending. Which is much harder with humans.
Eileen lives in Vancouver with her husband and dogs and no longer wishes to be anyone or anywhere else.

Now a varsity athlete and hotter than Charlie remembered, Will hangs with the crowd running the school. But Charlie doesn’t understand their power until an innocent delivery guy falls victim to a near-deadly hazing prank.
