About the Book:

As the popular darling of the junior class and heiress to the five-star Monrovi Inn empire, Kate has both everything and nothing. She's bored with school and life...until she locks eyes with Caleb at a school dance.

Caleb is new to Kate's exclusive prep school, and it's clear he doesn't fit in. In fact, he and his dad work in maintenance for Kate's father. And while Caleb knows better than to spend time with the boss's daughter, it seems that every time he tries to back away, something pulls him right back in.

When their parents demand that they are to stay away from each other, they learn of a fight between their families that occurred more than fifty years ago. It's a mystery Kate doesn't understand...but a legacy Caleb has endured his entire life.

With the world stacked against them, Caleb and Kate will have to walk by faith to find the path that God has planned for them.

1) No matter how many books you write, I’m sure each one has it’s own challenges. How was this book more challenging to write than your others? How was it easier?

Every book is like taking off on a new adventure, exploring the twists and turns of a story. Caleb+Kate was my first book that was fully a love story. I wondered how hard it would be to mine the deeper thoughts of love. Then the characters of Caleb and Kate were both so strong and immediately alive that I found their story wake right up – I had to type like mad as they took off.

2) What’s your strangest writing quirk or habit? Something that would make all of us go, “huh?”

In my desk, I have an assortment of crazy glasses and quirky toys like a rubber Van Gogh ear, a Slinky, a windup hopping Lederhosen and a nose that walks. One of favorite toys is a little windup robot that I’ve had since I was ten. For some reason, it helps me creatively to take a writing break, play with toys or wear my crazy glasses or sometimes I’ll even wear a funny wig like my blue rock star one. My family just shake their heads and say, “When’s dinner, weirdo?”

3) If your main characters, Kate and Caleb, could give one piece of advice to teenage girls/boys, what would it be?

Kate has lived in a very wealthy, materialistic world, but she’d say to seek beyond surface things to find the deeper truths, especially about love. Caleb would tell people that when it comes to love, never settle for anything but the real thing, then work like crazy to keep it strong and healthy. He’d also say to get out on the water and live a little -- surfs up!

4) Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what do you like to listen to?

Since I love a wide variety of music, I usually mix it up depending on my mood, the scenes I’m writing, and the time of day (80's rock during the late hours to keep me awake). For Caleb+Kate, I listened a lot on Pandora to stations made from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Owl City, Pearl Jam, Keane, Coldplay, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Dave Matthews Band, my favorite Hawaiian duo – Hapa – and even some classical music.

5) What book are you currently reading or what was the last book you read?

My daughter told me to read Stephenie Meyers’ recent novel The Host. I’m really enjoying it so far. No vampires, but still a good story! :)
