About the Book:

On the day of her first betrothal meeting--and rejection--Ai Ling discovers a power welling deep within her. She can reach into other people's spirits, hear their thoughts, see their dreams... and that's just the beginning.

Ai Ling has been marked by the immortals; her destiny lies in the emperor's palace, where a terrible evil has lived, stealing souls, for centuries. She must conquer this enemy and rescue her captive father, while mythical demons track her every step. And then she meets Chen Yong, a young man with a quest of his own, whose fate is intertwined with hers. Here is a heart-stopping, breathtaking tale for fans of action, fantasy, and romance -- of anything with the making of legend.

Read our exclusive interview with Cindy Pon!

1) If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would it be?

It would be a toss up between my hero, Chen Yong, or my antihero, Zhong Ye.

2) Which fictional character do you have a secret crush on?

I love both my hero and antihero, mentioned above. I also love Ariel, who is an elemental in Lisa Mantchev's fantastic debut, Eyes Like Stars.

3) Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?

So so many things. As an author, my most exciting moment was receiving my first editorial letter. It made me feel so official and I was very excited to get to work revising to improve my manuscript. Attending the ALA Chicago conference for the first time and being able to toast
Neil Gaiman on his Newbery medal for The Graveyard Book was unforgettable. And the best part of being a published writer is still receiving fan mail from my tween and teen readers. They are always so polite and so enthusiastic and smart. I just love them!

4) Which came first, the title or the novel?

I'm awful with titles. I don't think about them until I'm well done with the novel.

5) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?

Oh this is a really tough one. But I'd have to say fruit tarts, because I love the almondy crust and custard and fresh fruit, especially berries!
