The House of Night authors answer the top fan questions from all over the world. Listen to our exclusive interview with PC Cast and Kristin Cast here!

About the Book:

So…you’d think after banishing an immortal being and a fallen High Priestess, saving Stark’s life, biting Heath, getting a headache from Erik, and almost dying, Zoey Redbird would catch a break. Sadly, a break is not in the House of Night school forecast for the High Priestess in training and her gang. Juggling three guys is anything but a stress reliever, especially when one of them is a sexy Warrior who is so into protecting Zoey that he can sense her emotions. Speaking of stress, the dark force lurking in the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot is spreading, and Zoey is beginning to believe Stevie Rae could be responsible for a lot more than a group of misfit red fledglings. Aphrodite’s visions warn Zoey to stay away from Kalona and his dark allure, but they also show that it is Zoey who has the power to stop the evil immortal. Soon it becomes obvious that Zoey has no choice: if she doesn’t go to Kalona he will exact a fiery vengeance on those closest to her. Will Zoey have the courage to chance losing her life, her heart, and her soul? Find out in the next spectacular installment in the House of Night Series, Tempted.

The Espressologist by Kristina Springer

THE ESPRESSOLOGIST

2 Signed Copies will be given away on Friday, October 30, 2009

The Espressologist releases THIS week (on October 27). Sign up to win one of the first released copies...autographed by the author!

About the Book:

What’s your drink of choice? Is it a small pumpkin spice latte? Then you’re lots of fun and a bit sassy. Or a medium americano? You prefer simplicity in life. Or perhaps it’s a small decaf soy sugar-free hazelnut caffe latte? Some might call you a yuppie. Seventeen-year-old barista Jane Turner has this theory that you can tell a lot about a person by their regular coffee drink. She scribbles it all down in a notebook and calls it Espressology. So it’s not a totally crazy idea when Jane starts hooking up some of her friends based on their coffee orders. Like her best friend, Em, a medium hot chocolate, and Cam, a toffee nut latte. But when her boss, Derek, gets wind of Jane’s Espressology, he makes it an in-store holiday promotion, promising customers their perfect matches for the price of their favorite coffee. Things are going better than Derek could ever have hoped, so why is Jane so freaked out? Does it have anything to do with Em dating Cam? She’s the one who set them up! She should be happy for them, right? With overtones of Jane Austen’s Emma and brimming with humor and heart, this sweet, frothy debut will be savored by readers.

Check out our exclusive interview with Kristina Springer!

1) This is such a great book. I read it in one sitting! Where’d you get the idea of matching people together based on their coffee drinks?

Thanks! And believe it or not, the idea came to me while sitting in a coffee shop. :-) I was sitting at the local Starbucks with my husband having drinks. A particular person coming into the store caught my eye and I remember thinking, I know what that person is going to order. So I sorta eavesdropped on her order and it turned out I was right. I told my husband I should write a book about what type of people drink what type of coffee drinks and call it Espressology. He said, Yes! Definitely! He’s always supportive like that. Then I was watching the barista dealing with a customer and I thought no wait, I should have a barista who is an Espressologist and matchmakes people based on their favorite drinks! That became my lucky spot and I wrote the whole book from the same table at that Starbucks.

2) Your character, Jane, seems to be able to read people very well. Is this a personality trait you share?

You know, I do think I am able to read people pretty well. I get a feeling about someone pretty fast and it seems to be right most of the time.

3) What’s your favorite coffee drink and what does it say about you?

Jane and I share the same favorite drink. :-)

Large non fat mocha with no whip

Fun and sweet. A bit naïve. Most often happy. Always friendly. Trying to be health conscious (nonfat milk, no whip) but not that hard (mocha). :-)

4) This would make such a cute movie. Has there been any interest yet? Who can you best picture playing the lead?

There has been some interest and that is fun but nothing official. As for playing the lead? Hmm, that’s tough. Jane looks so specific in my head and I can’t think of anyone who resembles her. Maybe Selena Gomez?

5) This was a fabulous debut novel, what’s up next for you?

I’m super excited about my next book! It’s called, MY FAKE BOYFRIEND IS BETTER THAN YOURS and it’s about two 7th grade BFFs who each think each other’s “boyfriend” is a fake. It becomes competitive (like if one says her boyfriend sent her carnations the other says her boyfriend sent her roses) and hilarious. It will be out in the fall of 2010.

Thanks for having me!!

  • Ace AP physics project
  • Avoid murdering lab partner
  • Submit Yale application
  • Resolve possibly evil twin situation

Due date: December 15th

Getting into Yale has been her dream for years—and being generally overworked and totally under-rested is the price of admission. But when she opens her eyes the next day, she comes face-to-face with, well, her face—which is attached to her body, which is standing across the room. Wait, what?

Meet Kate's computer-generated twin. Kate doesn't know why she's here or how to put her back where she belongs, but she's real. And she's the last thing Kate has time to deal with right now. Unless . . .

Could having a double be the answer to Kate's prayers? After all, two Kates can do more work than one. Or will keeping her twin a secret turn her dream future into a living nightmare?

1) I love the concept of this book! There are SO many things I could do with a “Dupli-Jess.” If you could clone yourself, what would you have Cherry II do?

Oh my god. Don’t even get me started. Errands! All the stupid stuff I don’t feel like doing...I would basically make her my assistant. I love my job so it’s not like I’d ever have to send her in for that, but she would totally be on grocery-shopping and putting-gas-in-the-car and post office and dry-cleaning and laundry duty. She would have to get me Yogurtland at all hours. She would have to bake me brownies if I get a hankering for brownies.

2) The title is perfect. Did it come before the story? During the writing of the book? Or after the book was complete?

It was somewhere in the middle...I think I had finished a huge chunk of the first draft, if not the whole thing, before we settled on a title, so for a while it was just "magic double" or something equally nondescript (or descript, I guess, just not particularly catchy). :)

3) I read that you also write for the hit show, Family Guy (so cool!) What’s the biggest challenge in going from the writer’s room of the show to your own writer’s room at home?

Thanks! The biggest challenge is definitely discipline—on a TV show you’re in a room with a bunch of people so you’re actually accountable for doing something, whereas at home I can literally surf the net all day and write nothing and it’s not like anybody’s gonna be like “Um, hello?” I have no problem showing up at the office on time, but on my own, doing book stuff, I’m kind of all over the place unless there’s a deadline staring me right in the face.

4) What made you want to get into writing young adult books?

I actually hadn’t thought about writing books since I was a little kid, but then one day my agent asked if maybe I’d want to take a shot at writing a novel and I was like um, YES! At the time I had no idea it was going to be YA, but I’m so glad it turned out that way...the YA world is so fun and everyone is so nice.

5) Two books done! Phew! What’s up for you next? Are you working on a third?

Yep! No official info to report yet, but definitely working on it. Also, my next episode of Family Guy airs in November. It’s called “Hannah Banana” and is about Stewie becoming obsessed with Miley Cyrus, and the Evil Monkey meeting the family.

3 Signed Copies will be given away on Friday, October 16, 2009

About the Book:

Kara Martinez has been trying to be "normal" ever since the accident that took her father's life when she was eleven years old. She's buried the caliente side of her Mexican heritage with her father and tried to be the girl her rigid mother wants her to be -- compliant and dressed in pink, and certainly not acting out like her older brother Jason. Not even Danielle, her best friend at Valdez High, has seen the real Kara; only those who read her anonymous blog know the deepest secrets of the Sign Seer.Because Kara has a gift -- one that often feels like a curse. She sees signs, visions that are clues to a person's fate, if she can put together the pieces of the puzzle in time. So far, she's been able to solve the clues and avert disaster for those she's been warned about -- until she sees the flash of a gun on a fellow classmate, and the stakes are raised higher than ever before. Kara does her best to follow the signs, but it's her heart that wanders into new territory when she falls for a mysterious guy from the wrong side of town, taking her closer to answers she may not be able to handle. Will her forbidden romance help her solve the deadly puzzle before it's too late...or lead her even further into danger?

Check out our exclusive interview with Kelly Parra!

1) This is SUCH a cool concept for a story! How did you come up with the idea?

Hi Jessica, thanks! I’ve always been fascinated with the paranormal, and just love movies and series about psychics. So I thought wouldn’t it be cool to write about a teen you had a gift of seeing signs that she had to piece together like a puzzle in order to solve an unfortunate fate. Of course, any gift like this had to come with a price—loneliness, secrecy, and danger. That’s where Kara’s blog, Secret Fates, would come in. Secret Fates is an on-line journal to whisper her feelings and clues to the puzzle she is trying to solve, and her feelings for a mysterious boy.

2) Kara has a pretty unique gift. She can see signs about people’s future. Would you ever want to have this ability? Why or why not?

Definitely not. (haha!) I tried to explore every angle of having a gift like this with Kara, and it was often scary and painful to know something awful might happen to someone and not be able to stop it.

3) What was the most challenging part about writing this book? What was the easiest?

The most challenging of writing Invisible Touch was creating a mystery. This was my first attempt, and I had to create a plot board to keep track of the clues and subplots. The easiest part of writing this book was the blogging. I’ve been blogging for years so it was very comfortable for me to write Kara’s entries.

4) Okay, something non writing-related. If you could choose one snack food that you could eat as much as you want of and never gain a pound, what would it be?

It would have to be French fries. They are so good, yet so bad for me. :)

5) What’s up for you next? Are you working on another novel?

I have a contribution to a CRUSH anthology coming up and I am working on a new project that I am excited about. Once I have more news, I’ll definitely share. If anyone is interested in my other works, please check out my website, www.KellyParra.com or my blog, YA Fresh at yafresh.blogspot.com. Thank you again for having me on the site, Jessica!
