1) What genre have you not yet written but really want to try?

I would love to write a disaster novel, kind of dystopian. I have an idea, but so far haven't had the time to try it. But I'm going to!

2) If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about your book, what would the theme of the show be?

I would talk about the power of forgiving. All around me I see people caught up in bitterness and anger. It hurts YOU way more than it hurts the person you're angry with. There is so much freedom in letting go of all of that.

3) No matter how many books you write, I’m sure each one has it’s own challenges. How was this book more challenging to write than your others? How was it easier?

In Rock Harbor Search and Rescue I explored the injustice of being falsely accused. I wanted to make it all right for Emily, and I admit my blood pressure went up when I had to let her suffer. But returning to Rock Harbor with my much loved characters was really fun for me.

4) When you got that first phone call announcing you had sold a novel, how did you react? How did you celebrate?

I love to tell this story! When I got the call, I screamed so loudly the cat hid under the bed and wouldn't come out for hours. I called my pastor, but he wasn't there so I left a message on his answering machine. When he listened to it, he thought someone had died and he didn't know who to call back. He totally didn't recognize my voice!

5) If you weren’t a writer, what job would you love to try out?

I've always said if I weren't a writer, I'd be a naturopath. I'm very into natural medicine and am always advising friends (and strangers!) about health matters. I know it's an annoying trait!

Check out our Exclusive Interview with the Author Here!

1) What inspired you to write this book?

I've directed 2 movies and now 2 seasons of my MTV show and there are SO many behind the scenes stories that I never had time to share. Random, dramatic, adventurous, fun stories - from hiding in a bathroom at the MTV Movie Awards to putting my life on the line with an animal rescuer in Florida.

2) If you had one message that you'd like to impart on your readers, what would it be?

You will hear people say "you can't do it" all of the time. And maybe you can't. But if you work hard, believe in what you are doing, and willing to take serious chances, anything is possible. I had no family or friends that were in television or movies. But I fought hard - put up with a lot of naysayers - and have been able to do some cool things. And negative people, people who say I can't do something still happens everyday. All the time. For me, "no" is always the starting point.

3) Be honest, how many drafts did you have to write for this book?

At least 50. At least. Every page I probably went over 50, upwards of 100 times. I have a tough time not putting my all into something - as cheesy as that sounds. For my first movie, I shot 200 hours of footage and my second movie we shot 500 hours of footage (both were about 90 min movies). For my TV show we have shot well over 10,000 hours of footage.

4) If you weren’t a filmmaker what job would you love to try out?

Teacher! I think teachers have the most important job in the world. We all want the world to be a better place, and that starts with good teachers.

5) What was your favorite book growing up and why?

Berenstain Bears. And I have no idea why. But I love that family.
